if rube goldberg were a DJ with a reel-to-reel tape recorder

Soundtrack in my head: Devo, “Satisfaction”

While trying to look up information on an old reel-to-reel tape recorder that a previous resident left in our shed, I stumbled across this YouTube video that feels like a perfect symbol for Dance As You Are in many ways.  The page about my musical influences starts my childhood story about being fascinated by my parents’ reel-to-reel tape recorder, and then chronicles various musical influences throughout my life.  So in seeing vintage tape recorders used in a Rube Goldberg style to create minimal techno, I felt this to to be the perfect symbol of mixing old and new in creative ways.

That’s what I intend to do with the Dance As You Are event once it gets off the ground again. Not play with reel-to-reel tape recorders per se, but mix old and new. (I have temporarily put the project on hold to regroup, reorganize and refocus myself).  In the meantime, I want this blog to expose readers to and inform people about music of all types–from the Grateful Dead to Deadmau5, from Moby Grape to Moby and from the 5th Dimension to U2 to M83.
