But when I moved to Wisconsin, a funny thing happened. I found myself driving among polite, civilized people. And I haven’t been the same since.
someone sneezed. it must be a sign from God.
In re-reading my journals from 1996 and 1997, anyone reading what I wrote back then would have probably considered me to be annoying, neurotic, or both.
pleased to meet you, new co-op members. i’ll be living with you for the next year or so
As a result, the house dinner and house meeting of Sunday, August 26th was one of the most interesting ones I'd ever attended, as I found myself and another housemate from last year sitting down to dinner with five people who were completely new to the co-op and each other.
the Bangles star “bangled” banner night
I didn't intend for this to be 80's nostalgia week, with back-to-back postings about Prince and the Bangles, but that's how the muse struck me this week. So what? I make no apologies for that. And you can try to throw the proverbial book at the Bangles for the supposedly heinous crime of performing while old (though they really aren't that old), and they will still continue to play hard. fat is contagious–keep your distance from me
I've read the "fat is contagious" study, and all I can say is that this is junk science. The gap between the journalistic quality of the New England Journal of Medicine and Weekly World News has narrowed significantly, and not because Weekly World News's journalistic integrity has improved.
beating summer heat sans air conditioning
I have a variation of the above "stay cool" practice which admittedly is not the most energy-efficient. This practice has me running the fans all night to the point where the temperature in my room dips to about 58 degrees F (14 degrees C ) and I'm curled up underneath the quilt. And then, right before I leave, I shut all the windows and close the door. It works.
my skinny on fat
I believe that the War on Obesity will ultimately be no more effective than the War on Poverty, the War on Drugs, and the War on Terrorism, because, as is true in the previous examples, the war instigators know little about what it is they are fighting.
a Midwestern storm armageddon, and–oh i guess it passed to the north of us
It's not very often that I look at The Weather Channel website and get scared.
